Banasura Sagar Dam | An Evening Trip

Banasura Sagar Dam situated in WayanadU district and is impounds the KaramanathodU tributary of the Kabini River. The project is started in the year of 1979 and is commissioned for immigration purpose and power generation. Kakkayam hydro electric power plant is producing electricity by the water taking from this dam through a tunnel which having a length of 4763 m. The dam satisfies the demand for irrigation water in the region nearer to it in seasonal dry periods.

Banasura Sagar dam is located 24 km east to the Kalpetta in WayanadU district. It is the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. We can see many island-liked areas in the upstream of the dam, when it's in peak level. In this year (2011) the construction is going on the shutter area of the dam so the visitor’s entry to some extent are restricted. The visiting time is up to 6 pm. Boating is also available there at Rs. 250 per head. Boating time is limited to 15 minutes for a person.

Travelling Note:

I visited the dam in the last of the month, March 2011. It’s very cool in the evening time when I walk through the top of dam. The road is renewed nearly. KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) vehicles are going to and fro through it in many times. A boat is riding through the dam like a small swan. I am sure that this seen should make more pleasure to every minds.
One of my friend is trying to capture the beauty of the dam by his Sony Cybershot. Hills are looking green in far. We wont feel bored to walk through the site with our dear ones in this lovely evening.
Now sun is trying to hide behind the hills. By saying "Good Bye" to the Banasura Dam, I am returning to my home.
