Bharananganam is a village situated 5 km from Palai in Kottayam District. Now this place becomes very famous pilgrim centre in Kerala. As we know St. Alphonsa’s grave is situating here.St. Alphonse was born in 1910 August 19 in Muttathupadathu House at Kudamaloor Village near Kottayam. She was born to Auseph and Mariyamma Family. She was baptized at Kudamaloor Church. After the 50th day of baptism her mother passed away. So she was transferred to her uncle’s house in Muttuchira. She was studied up to 3rd standard in Muttuchira Govt. School and she was not able to continue her studies because of many illness problems. She remained at Muttuchira till she was 15 years. Then she was joined to Bharananganam Convent with a glory support from the god. Many of her relatives was tried to change her decision but she was never changed her mind. For a short period she was a school teacher at Vakakkadu School. Then she was bedridded because of many types of health problems. She was not able to walk at that time. All treatments are became waste but she never stopped prayer to god in this situation also.
On28th of July 1946, her soul was taken to the ‘Abba Father’. But very soon her Grave was visited by students of her Convent School and they got many blessing from the Alphonsamma for their prayers. Now as we all know she becomes the saint and mother of all believers. She is the first Saint from India who is born & lived in the India. Now St. Alphonsa Tomb is becomes very famous and several people are coming here with many prayers.
The church is built 1000 years back during 1004 AD. Now two churches are there in one compound and St. Alphonsa’s Tomb is in one.
Travel Note:
It was very rush at that time, when I visited St. Alphonsa’s Tomb on a Saturday evening. The road to the church is now a State Highway and is recently tarred. The church is in the side of the State Highway. I will recommend to all those who are interested to go there, should attend the Holy Mass. I am sure it will refresh your mind.
Time to visit the Tomb: As my personal opinion it will be good Morning Time and Evening Time, all over the year.
